This is a large guitar that doesn't feel as large as most jumbos because its greater air volume comes from a wide soundbox with a narrow depth. Wider but thinner than a Dreadnaught, it achieves the Dreadnaught's large, full-depth sound while feeling more comfortable and intimate to play. A combination of great power, clarity and warmth is also a feature of its mahogany construction. This particular guitar configuration has become a great favorite among country blues and blues-ragtime players: indeed the scheme was originally created by and for the students of the late, great bluesman/reverend Gary Davis of New York City. during the early 1960s, such as Marc Silber, John Gorka and John Sebastian.

This OM-style steel-string guitar features picture-perfect fiddleback European maple with low action and a smooth, enveloping sound. It is not brand new, but has never been owned: I made it several years ago to serve as an instrument for display. It has since appeared in numerous shows and exhibits around the country, most recently a three-month stint behind glass at the Springfield Museum in Springfield, Massachusetts. As such, it displays minor shop wear and so its price reflects a reduction from its original valuation of $5500.00.

This instrument was purchased by C.M.A in Moorpark CA on 9/2019. Upon receipt, he wrote back:

I received the guitar today. To say that it is superb is an understatement. The sound is rich, full, the guitar has amazing intonation and quick response. It is breathtaking to look at and smell. It is beyond what I had hoped for. You are an amazing luthier, and thanks for sharing your gifts with me. I will treasure it always.

Astounded,

Purpleheart
seven-string Jumbo

Virtually like new, never owned. This extremely rare, seven-string variant of the American flat-top steel string guitar was made by myself for my personal use a decade ago, when my love for Brazilian music inspired me to create a Violao de Sete Cordas.

Recently, the guitar was taken from storage, tuned up and played. It's action, intonation, and appearance emerged intact over the years, although its finish had ambered. This rare guitar should be in some ambitious guitarist's hands rather than in storage.

SOLD

The guitar is tuned like an ordinary steel string guitar (it's scale is a standard Martin long scale) with the customary light-gauge set, but a seventh .060 wound string is added on the bass side, which can variously be tuned to a low B, C or D. The existence of a large, low-tuned string and it's sympathetic vibrations color the entire sound range of the instrument and lend a unique baritone quality to the instrument--regardless of its standard guitar scale.

Singer-songwriter Joel Zoss (recording artist for Rounder, Smithsonian and BMG Japan) stopped in the shop recently and tried his hand on it.

You can listen to a short fragment of his try-out here:

The seven-string's back and sides (and headstock veneer) are made entirely of 4-inch wide slats of Amaranth (also known as purpleheart or violetwood), a resonant hardwood similar in density and tambour to rosewood. The narrow slats were fashioned into a multi-piece wide guitar back, arranged in converging, wedge ribs, giving the impression of a lute-like shell.
